Beauties and the Beast: When Auction Estimates Kill - NEW YORK — A no-nonsense mood prevailed at Christie’s as it opened the January round of Old Master Paintings sales on Wednesday. The $34.33 million that 43 lots brought in the morning session proved that big money continues to be spent on art. But the 16 works that failed to sell out of the 59 that came on the block also demonstrated that overenthusiastic estimation has become an instant killer.
